Thanksgiving in Gardena

I hope everyone had a full and relaxing Turkey Day. Unfortunately, I was unable to make it up north to spend the holiday with my family but I was lucky enough to be invited to Junya's home in Gardena. I had an amazing time complete with plenty of food and coziness. I am very thankful for the hospitality.

It feels only right to begin the photo posting with this mountain of tamales. During the first two days I ate no less than and probably much more than 20 tamales. Chicken ones with red salsa. Chicken ones with green salsa. And the best kind, filled with raisins. I'm not sure what the normal mode of tamale consumption is in Mexican culture, but I ate them cold, hot, in the morning, afternoon, night time...in my dreams.

Junya's brother Masa and I, unstoppable BP champions for the weekend, and possibly for eternity. Our mesmerizing attire might have something to do with it.

Junya's pops has a giant aquarium sustaining a kingdom of beautiful Koi fish, most of them a couple feet long with calligraphic scales. My camera does not do justice to the amazing structure of aquatic gods but believe me when I say I've yet to see more impressive "pets".

Everytime I walked up to the water, these guys would cram up to the corner closest to me and shove their blubbery mouths as high above the surface as possible looking for some grub. Junya said I could touch them but I could not gather the cajones to do so.

Lobo was too fast for the camera. I unknowingly called him Bobo the entire weekend, only to find out at the end that his name was actually Lobo and Bobo means "idiot" in Spanish.

A very memorable weekend. I hope to visit again soon. I will not take no for an answer Junya.

Birthday / Gallery Opening

The Briand house had a great party this Thursday to celebrate Amar's ascension to adulthood. I must say, I had an amazing time and I hope everyone else did too. Garden of Bears

This Friday was the quarterly Bear Garden festival, which I've been designing for the past year and a half or so. It's been getting bigger and better with each festival, so I made an appearance to take some flicks.

FREE food, beers, and gifts equals many many happy people.

Met up with Zach and Dave, big fans of all the festivities. Here, they are deeply mesmerized by a red toothpick. Must be all the bears.

Out of all the games, Bear Ball Bounce provides the most tickets per win. Banking shots off the faces of innocent little bears is a necessary price to pay for tickets.

Zach and Dave are very content with the prizes they got from trading in their 102 tickets. To be specific, I think they won a "Xmas Bear" and a "Standing Bear".

It's been hard finding time and inspiration to put together solid designs the past 2 months, but recently I've been able to gather some ideas into workable pieces. Here's the beginning steps to one of the designs. I'm not sure how far it will go or when if ever it will be printed, but check it out.

A very basic and rough sketch scanned into Photoshop.

The outline of a quick vector foundation. A lot of work still needs to be done, but this should be sufficient to present to the team.

Look for posts after further work. I'm thinking it will look pretty different.

Not being a very good listener and too eager for his own good, Junya jumps ahead of the crowd with too much enthusiasm and firepower.

Spilled drinks and chopsticks lost on the floor and the many emotions that follow.

All is forgotten when the feast arrives. The 4x4 combo is a must while anyone wild enough to have cream cheese in their sushi has to try to the Golden Tempura roll.

BARE Magazine, September 2008 Issue

What's this on Page 21?

BARE Magazine (http://blog.baremagazine.org) did a nice little spread of Inogu Fabrics on their September issue. BARE Magazine is dedicated to all things fashion, and let me just add: it is incredibly well done. I went through the entire issue, cover to cover, only to be enlightened by well written articles, great layouts, professional pictures and so much more. A lot of time was put into this magazine and everyone should definitely check out their blog. BARE is involved with a lot of fashion that is happening around Berkeley; and it was truly refreshing to see. Below is the article:

Inogu Fabrics is a new brand based out of California founded in 2008 by Jason Lee and Jordan Ma who are at UC Berkeley and UC San Diego respectively. Their roots stretch back to Salt Lake City, Utah as childhood best friends but their paths diverged as Jason moved to Colorado, and Jordan to California. It was through a shared interest in music, art, photography, and style that brought them back together to create Inogu Fabrics. Inogu is derived from the word "enogu" meaning color or paint, thus perfectly encapsulating the bold colors and unique original designs. They are exploring ways to bring a mature sophistication to everyday expression while capturing the youthful whimsy of childhood imagination. Inogu Fabrics has been featured in various fashion blogs and is currently anticipating the release of its second collection which is due in August.

I would like to personally thank Doreen Bloch, editor-in-chief, and the rest of the BARE Magazine staff for reaching out to us and giving us this wonderful opportunity to showcase some of our stuff as well as reach out to a broader spectrum of people. A lot has been going on this past month with the Fall collection drop, working on upcoming projects and school starting up. Between sprinting to the post office to get orders out and droning through the 3 hour classes, I managed to snap some pictures of Inogu around San Diego.

Just because our models this time around were all male, does not mean the ladies can't turn some heads rocking the IF. More evidence below.

Tom is not a lady but he's got some nice biceps and an even nicer hat. The shirt and sunglasses can use some work though...(give me a call Tom, I'll hook you up).

Patty picked up the LAST small black tank. Actually, that's the last small pasture in any color. :(

Our best seller from the first collection still lookin' good in modern times. Should we bring it back?

Took a trip to the Dawson Los Monos Canyon Reserve for a photography class. We got there a little late and failed to catch up with the rest of the class, losing them in the forest of poison oak and bees. Since we never made it to the main site, there wasn't much variety to photograph. I did what I had to do to get the good shots.

Junya gets patched up. Gotta look good where ever you go, even on the operating table.

A few pictures accumulated through the frenzy that ensued in the past few weeks with the launch, collaboration work soon to be seen and the fated end of summer...

Jason is mesmerized by the craziness inside Amoeba. This was during my recent visit to Berkeley when Jason and I spent some quality time finalizing the bits and pieces before the Fall drop as well engaging in some deep conversations about the future of Inogu Fabrics. Amazingly, that was the first time we have met face to face since Inogu Fabrics was officially launched.

I love the look and smell of a stack of fresh new shirts, neatly folded and comfortably cuddled together awaiting their future homes.

Sophia's Thai for dinner with my bro the night before I head back to San Diego. Excited for the sun and all the eager SD customers waiting for their reserved items. Don't worry, they are all safely set aside. Still, I am slightly more saddened to leave Davis this time around. Sometimes you can forget how nice it feels to be at home home (not a typo).

Y+A Silver

A little silver is a nice accent to any outfit. Everyone once in awhile I like to pick up a new piece or two. For the past couple years I've always gone to the same place, Y+A Silver in Taiwan. It's a tiny a niche in the wall, can barely fit 5 people. But ever since my uncle took me along for a visit to Y+A many years ago, I've never been disappointed by its products.

All the pieces are imported from Japan or Europe or custom made in Taiwan. (Note: that bottle of green tea is mine, not a part of the interior dec.)

The shop design is classy, with giant wooden frames and marble.

I came to photograph the spot but couldn't help but pick something up for myself. This pretty guy almost made it home with me but at the last minute I went for something just a little nicer.

Got some famous mango ice afterwards. I've heard about this from everyone for a couple years. Finally found some time to test it out. I was not disappointed. Refreshing.

I actually just made it back into the states. I will sure miss Taiwan. Definitely some good times, foods, and lessons. I am back just in time for launch. I'll be visiting Jason tomorrow. Between now and tomorrow night, be ready for the long-awaited drop as long as an upgraded site.

Patchwork > where apparel, toys & design collide

I frequently visit this boutique in Taipei. It specializes in Toy2r vinyl as well as a nice selection of apparel. The staff is very friendly and loyal customers constantly pass by to pick up new goods. Since my last visit, they've temporarily closed shop to relaunch in a couple weeks or two as a boutique/tea shop. That's what it takes these days with the plethora of boutiques popping up everywhere. The new post should be opening soon. I wish you guys the best! Here's a look at what it used to be

A Look Around the Neighborhood

During my extended stay in Taiwan, I've found many engaging destinations that have both entertained and inspired me. At the same time, I've met many interesting people with great stories and experiences to share. It's amazing how much you can learn by just having a good conversation with a stranger. Here's a couple fashion boutiques I checked out. Some sit proudly on the front row of the city's busy shopping districts, while others are hidden in dark alleys, almost impossible to find if you're not looking for it. All of them are worth a glimpse. Definitely hit up google if any of these brands intrigue you.

Here we have AMPM, one of my favorite discoveries, I came upon it while stumbling down a tiny crevice in the city. Truthfully, I was slightly scared with some of the shady characters chillin' in this alley and the lack of escapes routes. AMPM was an oasis of neon lights and glamorized graffiti. Their products from what I saw can best be described through the items in their window display and are primarily geared towards females, with a very dedicated fanbase. These are all designed by store owner Joe, who can be seen manning the front desk here. Though there's also a solid selection of mens materials ranging from graffiti inspired black garments to more flamboyant neon print tees. These are designed by the masked gunman below, who hails from Canada. He came to Taiwan to tag up the walls but decided to stay a little longer.

Their front window display: Mushrooms, rifles and old-school nintendo. Very cool.

Personally, I would have went with the plaid uzi...but that's just me.

Next stop: CO-OP. This boutique sits nicely on the corner, with full glass windows that act as a catalog of their entire shop.

CO-OP features a more classical selection of streetwear, with products primarily from Hong Kong and a few designers from Taiwan.

Crouching tiger or constipation. A simple and mysterious display. I dig it. CO-OP sells a nice variety of clothing, with some kicks and quality watches, which aren't pictured here. Staff member Ronny suggests we check out Hong Kong based brand: Start From Zero.

What you see here is the entire men's store of Purr. The women's store is next store. Small and cozy but filled with nice stuffs. Their products are imported from Korea, with unique brands that are described as simple and more fit/slender. Thanks for the tour, Seven!

Preliminary Shooting Begins

As inventory comes rolling in, shooting for the website and fall lookbook begins. We've had a couple successful shoots and are in the process of planning the main shoot which will happen in a week or two. Every shoot I've come to learn something new whether it is about photographing other people, photographing the products, styling, make up, props, lighting, how to give directions... just an incredible amount of things. The attention to detail is paramount, and we're looking forward to a very successful final shoot coming up here in a week or so.

Picked up some more vinyl toys this weekend. Went with some old school Qee Bears that were available for a pretty nice price at a Toy2r boutique in Taipei. I will be returning there before I leave Taiwan to pick up some more and talk about some retail opportunities as they carry a small selection of clothing also. More on that later. For now:

The Good Old Days

One the verge of releasing our new collection of sexy wearables and planning the assumed photoshoot, I decided to take a look at an old folder from our last photo shoot in San Diego. Found a few nice ones that never made it to the public eye...until now. And thanks again to Mickey, Hubert, and Paul for lending us their handsome physiques, and Stacey for the photography.

Everything about this photo perplexes me. For some reason, Hubert and I have taken a keen interest in the flowers while Mickey is crawling around on the lawn on his toes and fingertips...peeking through Paul's lower regions. Paul is just oblivious. This picture is a great example of the many things we learned NOT to do from our first photo shoot.

Hubert picks an orange with grace; I save a ladybug from Mickey's shoulder; Hubert and Mickey team up in an attempt to uncover the meaning and mystery of the puzzle that is Blood&Water.

*Some people have been asking me how my life has changed now that Inogu Fabrics is on the governmental radar as a "business". Not much has materialistically changed in my life. What has happened, however, is a flooding of my mail box. New credit card companies, all these banks I've never heard of, all these supposed deals I'm missing out on, all coming in daily to the mail box. These solicitations make me feel exposed, vulnerable ... everyone knows where I live. But if all this is the cost of keeping Inogu Fabrics running, then keep the mail coming.

Monkey Olympics

*Check out BBC's unique interpretation of the Monkey King to promote their broadcast of the 2008 Olympics. Its creators are the same guys responsible for the Gorillaz so you know it's gonna be some good stuff. I feel like they employed a very successful modern style of art and music while maintaining the integrity of the ancient Chinese tale. Watch it a couple times. The animation's references to specific Olympic sports are subtle yet stimulating when realized.

A customized background for my mobile telephone in Taiwan. Looks a lot nicer in real life but you get the picture. Can anyone guess what it is?

*In the background, you can see some Gmail action on the laptop. Behind the blurriness is actually a conversation between Jason and I on Gmail chat. 80% of the decisions and creativity happens on gmail chat. I gotta admit, and I think Jason agrees, that if we lived in the same city, rather than me in SD and Jason in Berkeley, we'd be able to make things happen for Inogu Fabrics much much more efficiently. Now that I'm in Taiwan for the summer, it's even tougher to get things done. Thought, it's really more about the flow of ideas rather than actual work getting done, which isn't an issue. Still, despite a slight roadbump, which probably had more to do with inexperience than distance, we will be releasing the next collection of brand new gear very soon. Stay posted.

*The success of our spring collection has prompted a very important decision, and resulted in a milestone for Inogu Fabrics. After going to the Alameda County clerks office as well as the Board of Equalization, waiting in countless hours of lines and watching wedding after wedding after wedding, filling out pages of paper work, being turned down and directed towards the Law Library, studying law books for half an hour, refilling out paper work, waiting in line again while witnessing happy couples consummate their relationships, then finally paying a fee ... Inogu Fabrics is now a registered business. We now pay taxes and contribute part of our hard-earned profit to the government. But we can now deal with boutiques, retails, and all sorts of businesses. This has opened my eyes and opened the doors to a lot of new opportunities.

*Received a package of Mystery Spot EPs from Chillis at USC today! The self-titled EP is composed of Chillis on the beats and Quinn Singer at the vocals, featuring Cloud Reignwrite. It's some interplanetary, psychedelic, hip-hop, electronic, indie, bumpin' freshness for the ears. The EP is sort of a prelude to Chillis' premier solo album, which should be coming out soon. Definitely expect some sort of collaboration between Chillis and Inogu in the near future. Look for a downloadable version of the EP here at the Inogu Fabrics blog.

*I've had a hard time getting all the models and photographers together for a photo shoot so after class I met up Junior and Stacey at the cliffs for a trial run. With the sun already setting when we got there, the trip was not too successful. But sushi at Nozomi's afterwards was delicious.

*I got a call late Friday about a small hip hop show going on in town with Dj Exile. I thought I'd stop by and promote a bit for Inogu Fabrics. It's also been awhile since my last show so my ears were achin' to be blown out. The audience sure was sparse so couldn't do too much promoting but all the performers were legit and not lacking enthusiasm even in front of a small crowd. Definitely check out rappers Sene and Coss. I was very impressed.

The first shipment of shirts have arrived. We've waited for this moment too long.

*Finally, after many many unexpected roadbumps, the first shipment of shirts for our premier Spring drop have arrived. Lesson to all: Don't make any promises for release dates until you have every item in my hands. So, everyone - including the Inogu crew - have some patience. When they finally arrive, it'll be like we never had to wait.
